A memorial to my late father, who always wanted me to paint the landscape in my mother’s backyard. It serves as tribute to my roots, my childhood, and my family. I also wanted it to be a representation of my environment, as it portrays the surrounding neighborhood.

A tribute tho the Highland Park Theatre, which was more than just a place to catch a film but more importantly, a historical landmark. At a point in the early 2020’s there was community outrage because there was a lot of uncertainty with what was to be of the building after it closed down. Fortunately, access Kirsten Stewart recently purchased it with the goal of breathing in new life into such a prominent staple of our community.

This piece is a critique on the gentrification Highland Park and Los Angeles in general has faced over the last decade and more. From the displacement of families to rent skyrocketing, it’s a shame that someone like me who was raised in this area can’t even afford to live there anymore let alone those same families that opened businesses and have lived there for generations. Entire households were uprooted like nothing, replaced by high end coffee shops and million dollar homes. However, as gentrification has tried to erase the proud, rich culture that  was there for generations, I wanted to make it a point that this same culture is here to stay and the my neighborhood and city is not for sale. There is and has always been something real in this area and it’ll never be erased and I want to make sure of that.
